​​​​​Overview

The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (now the Saudi Central Bank) issued two commemorative banknotes marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, dated 05/10/1419H, corresponding to 23/01/1999. In recognition of the significance of this historic occasion, new banknotes were issued: the 200 riyals and 20 riyals denominations. Both banknotes feature the official emblem of the centenary celebration and circulate alongside all current banknotes as an official currency. These commemorative issues are distinguished by a range of advanced technical specifications and security features developed in accordance with the latest standards in banknote printing.

On 07/04/1442H, corresponding to 22/11/2020, the 20 riyals banknote was issued as an official commemorative banknote, on the occasion of Saudi Arabia’s presidency of the G20, and the hosting of the Leaders’ Summit in Riyadh.

  • Obverse:
  • The center features a picture of King Abdulaziz, followed by a watermark and a serial number on the right of it. On the right side of the banknote, a picture of the Al-Masmak Palace Gate appears below the name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency in Arabic. Below the picture, the value of the banknote appears in Arabic. On the left side of the banknote, a security thread and a metal layer containing SAMA’s emblem, surrounded by the emblem of Saudi Arabia, continuously appear. On the bottom of the banknote, signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor of SAMA.
  • Reverse:
  • The center features a picture of the Al-Masmak Palace. Above the picture, the name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency appears in English. The value of the banknote appears in English below it, and on the left side of the banknote, the logo of the centenary occasion is shown.

  • Obverse:
  • The center features a picture of King Abdulaziz, followed by a picture of Quba Mosque on the right. Above the picture, the name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency in Arabic, the currency value in Arabic, and a metal layer containing SAMA’s emblem surrounded by the emblem of Saudi Arabia continuously appear. On the left side of the banknote are a watermark, a security thread, and a serial number. On the bottom of the banknote, signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor of SAMA.
  • Reverse:
  • The center features a picture of Jabal Al-Nour in Makkah. Above the picture, the name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency appears in English. Below it, the value of the banknote appears in English. On the left side of the banknote, the logo of the centenary occasion is shown.​

20 Riyals Note
  • ​Obverse:
  • The center features a picture of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, and the logo of Saudi Arabia’s Presidency of G20 in a 3D form.
  • Reverse:
  • The center features a map of the world, depicting the G20 countries in a different color. Saudi Arabia’s map emits a light symbolizing the meeting point of these countries on its land, and Saudi Arabia’s importance as a source of civilization and economic emission.
